Our Work

Four needs. One coordinated response.

Water, energy, health and education rarely fail in isolation — so HUM doesn't approach them that way either. Here's what each looks like in practice, and how we decide where to start.

Water Access

In many villages, the challenge isn't a missing water source but broken or incomplete infrastructure — a pump never connected, a scheme sanctioned but not executed. HUM verifies what's on paper against what's on the ground, and coordinates through programmes like Jal Jeevan Mission to close that gap.

What this looks like: helping panchayats identify non-functional water points and escalate them through the right channel.

Reliable Energy

Grid electricity has reached most villages on paper, but reliability varies sharply — some homes see power for only a few hours a day. HUM maps where connections are unreliable or absent, and where off-grid solutions like solar micro-grids make more sense than waiting for grid expansion.

What this looks like: mapping villages by daily hours of power, then matching each to the most realistic near-term fix.

Health & Care

Distance is often the real barrier to healthcare in rural India — the nearest primary health centre can be an hour or more away. HUM works to connect villages to health camps, schemes like Ayushman Bharat, and local health workers who can triage before a long trip becomes necessary.

What this looks like: coordinating health camps and helping eligible families actually enrol in schemes they qualify for.

Learning & Education

A school building doesn't guarantee learning — teacher shortages, dropout after certain grades, and missing materials all quietly undercut it. HUM looks at what's actually missing in each village's schooling, not just whether a school exists.

What this looks like: supporting learning materials, tracking dropout points, and connecting families to continuing-education options.

Our method

How we decide where to start

Every village is assessed on its own terms — this is the process behind that, from first contact to follow-up.

1. Listen

Needs come in through the community helpline and the on-ground volunteer WhatsApp network.

2. Assess

A visit maps the real situation against what government schemes already promise on paper.

3. Coordinate

We match the village to the right existing scheme or partner, rather than starting from scratch.

4. Follow up

We check back that the specific gap actually closed — and stayed closed.

Current stage
HUM is in its founding stage — we're building the volunteer network and partner relationships before our first village engagement.
